Secret money saving formula moving truck rental companies don't want you to know about.

Moving can be so expensive! But, with a little work, you can negotiate the price of your rental truck, saving yourself a lot of money.

The very first thing you'll want to do is lock down a moving date. Rental prices vary greatly depending on the time of year and day of the week. Once you know when you're going to be going, you can check online for rental prices. Try to do this about two months in advance, if you can.

Now that you have a date locked in, see what the going rate is for moving trucks. In every search, I have ever done (and there have been many), U-haul is typically the most expensive, followed by budget. We typically have used Penske for every move, except one. Still, you'll need to get a price quote for all three companies.

Here is where things start to get fun:

First, you'll call U-haul. Ask the customer service agent for the lowest price. Sometimes you can find coupons online, but they're not common. This probably goes without saying, being polite goes a long way in getting a good price, so be sugary sweet.

As soon as you have the quote for U-haul, call Budget Truck Rental. Ask for their best price. It may be lower than U-haul, but it may not. If not,  tell them the price U-haul offered and ask if they can beat it. They can, and usually will. If it is lower, ask for a better rate. If you're polite, they'll probably hook you up.

Finally, take the rate quote from Budget and call Penske. They offer a lot of discount codes online anywhere from 10-30% off. Having one of these on hand is helpful but not necessarily. Tell them that you have been searching for a good deal and then tell them the lowest rate you've found. If you have a coupon code, they will sometime even stack the savings for you.

On our move a few months ago, I used this little secret. I saved our family over $800! Give it a try!
